So my wife booked my FIL using his nickname (Ned instead of Edward). The United agent told me they can't do a name correction because they don't recognize that as the same name (...?)

Per the wiki, it doesn't sound like he'll have a problem. The only people who would even catch it are TSA, right? They won't give him grief?
