Marriott is required to prominently disclose what the destination fee includes under the terms of a class action lawsuit settlement. I was just at the Sheraton NY Time Square the other day which charged me $35 and at check-in they explained all the things that this fee covered.
Yes, it's a total and blatant money grab, but they have to tell you all the "benefits" that it covers.
