Of the 100s of flights I've taken out of Changi I've never been asked to show specifically a return ticket. However, depending on the destination I have been asked to show onward travel. An onward travel check is just a simple (but not guaranteed) verification that the traveler does not have the intention to overstay a visa limit. Nothing more than that.
