And I never asked for an upgrade at this hotel, most of the upgrades were processed on the day before or (like last time) with an automatic upgrade 3 days in advance.
From the somewhat defensive response I got from the FD agent I got the impression that he gets a lot of grief over the issue. I did ask politely if any upgrade was available and left it at that. Perhaps as a frequent stayer you get better treatment or as the poster above says the internal policy has changed.
