Upgrades are just a part of the 1K value prop. Earning more miles per dollar spent. Access to better / quicker irrops travel assistance. Boarding. etc.
When I have been evaluating this, the extra redeemable miles was a significant benefit. But seeing the ridiculous miles being charged lately, if there is any award space at all, has greatly negated its value as well.
