Arelauquen Lodge Bariloche Argentina = Interesting Quiet Mountain Lodge

Introduction Usually in interesting but remote destinations I like to stay at SLH, LHW, or Design Hotels, despite limited elite benefits. There are not many chain hotels in Bariloche, yet Tribute Portfolio is a brand with full benefits so I cannot complain despite my stay being a mixed bag. Location The location is the strong point of this hotel provided guests have a rental car. Not only Bariloche in general is a nice destination to explore, but I addition Arelauquen Lodge is in a full gated community with lots of luxury villas which have nothing to do with the hotel itself, which is in the middle of the estate and very small with only 27 rooms in a golf course and mountain views. Room The hotel only has one junior suite and it was under maintenance so instead we were upgraded to one of their better Grand King rooms, on the top floor (4th) of the hotel. I was informed that the junior suite is on the ground floor so views are most likely inferior and the price difference with the Grand King seems to be modest because the suite is not a lot more spacious (42 sqm) than the larger version of the Grand King rooms which range from 32 to 40 sqm. Our room was charming and quite fitting for a mountain destination with lots of wood and the angled ceiling. This hotel is not new and modern in fact some parts of our room could have used some maintenance, also housekeeping was not the most thorough. There were hair on the wall of the shower when we arrived, and it was not cleaned up by housekeeping on any morning that our room was serviced during our stay either. One oddity was that there were no tissues in the room. When I asked I was told they did not have any available but that they would bring them the next day. They actually delivered on their promise but there was a communication or English translation problem because what they brought us were wet baby wipes for our daughter, which they seemed to have bought that morning just for us. I would not expect a hotel to provide baby wipes so it was a good gesture but we had to forego the Kleenex during our stay and simply used toilet paper. Dining The restaurant and the other common areas like the bar with fireplace were lovely with views of the golf course and the mountains in the distance. Not only the hotel was quiet when we stayed, but in addition they required guests to pick a time slot for their breakfast time. That meant that any time we went to breakfast it was very peaceful, in total contrast with the zoo-like atmosphere in some crowded hotels nowadays including some mountain resorts. In terms of breakfast food it was not the most impressive. They brought set items to our table (no buffet) and it was limited to a bit of fruits, bakeries, and cold cuts. We could order eggs made to order but overall I found breakfast to be was slim pickings. Cappucino was also not part of the Platinum free breakfast benefit – extra charge was required. Food for room service was much better than breakfast and the prices were more in line with restaurants in town, and not reflective of captive resort prices at all so it was good value. We received a bottle of wine in the room with some desserts as the welcome amenity, but in addition they provided a voucher for escabeche, home-made bread, and another bottle of wine at the bar, on top of another voucher for a cocktail. Wifi The main negative of the stay was internet. When it worked it was fast, I clocked speed of 90 Mbps. The problem is that there were several outages, some of them being long stretches of a few hours. Eventually they called a technician on site to fix the problem but even the next day it was still not working 100%. Overall Overall the stay was mixed but unlike in big cities with lots of competition from many hotel chains, in picturesque destinations I can let a lot of issues slide. Overall I liked the friendly service and the location of the hotel so I can recommend it.
