So you're able to select the seat then? No? Sounds like it is blocked from a passenger selecting it then.

Every seat 1A tomorrow is showing unavailable. This close in that is because someone is either assigned to it, or it has been blocked last minute.

The 777-300 (77W), which is what flies on NRT-EWR, has an overhead crew rest area which is the designated rest "seats" for that type. If the overhead rest is unavailable then any seat in business can be used for crew rest as a replacement. More importantly, the 77W does not fly on the EWR-LHR route, so your experience with where a pilot had crew rest does not apply to the 76L or the 77E that is utilized on EWR-LHR. If you really don't believe 1A is the crew rest seat, feel free to call back the global services line. It is a quick search in their policy manual the exact seats which are designated for crew rest on every plane in the fleet.

Edit: looks like it was just recently changed in past couple days to 77W. Regardless the point still stands, since prior to that it was predominantly a 787 variant on that route, all of which have overhead crew rest and the backup is just any open business seat if overhead rest isn't available.
