1A is the crew rest seat for all of the planes they have operating that route (no it is not interchangeable with 1D, and it is set in conjunction with the FAA. The only plane with a D seat designated for crew rest is the 76C, and it defaults to 6D, the backup for double augmenation is any other D seat).
Typically UA blocks 1A for selection for a PAX when a flight is restricted -- there are no flights tomorrow that show this... And you are 100% wrong about 1A -- last month I flew from NRT - EWR on a 777 and the crew rest seat was 1D -- I was in 1A and offered my seat to the resting Pilot -- he thanked me and rested in 1D....
