I carry a pack of neon yellow or orange Post-It Notes and stick a message to my door not to be disturbed until 4:00pm late checkout time. I do not need to use this Post-It often, but when I do, it seems to do the trick.
I use the 4PM check out often because I sometimes have to work overnight and need to sleep. This is the only method that seems to work at avoiding the multiple knocks.
