It actually is confusing (and somewhat annoying) when a center seat in PC is assigned and the entire back half of the cabin has empty seats throughout. I would actually rather sit in a non PC seat with empty center than a PC row with center seat filled.

Yeah, those middle PC seats always seem to fill up. When booking I always grab an aisle or window to make 2/3 seats filled with the middle empty... hoping it will stay that way and it rarely does. On a recent flight literally the last person on the plane had it! I have sometimes had it empty and it's honestly about 95% as comfortable as FC. A few less drinks.... Or, at least I have to go to the back of the plane to get them. As we Americans all get larger the width of the seats is laughable. By the end of the flight I'm definitely more acquainted with seat mate than I'd like.
