Personally, I'd call the property directly. They are sometimes more flexible if you explain why you aren't able to use the existing reservation. Often, they will allow you to move the reservation to a later date (which you can then later cancel without penalty if you can't make the new dates). Of course, YMMV, and some properties are not at all flexible in this area.
