I believe fare bucket is archaic. With the advanced IT, airlines should be able to distinguish every ticket from a flight and attach different sets of price and rule to it. However, since it is well established and widely used in the industry, I do not see it to be replaced anytime soon.
That may be simple if you're a point-to-point carrier with little to no connecting traffic. But once you mix in connections and partner airlines and other complex routings, the IT system might not be able to be able to correctly price it. Fare buckets at least gives some structure to more complicated multi-segment itineraries.
