My resort credit is usually used up in the first few months. All it takes is ones stay.
Not everyone's travels "naturally" takes them near a Hilton resort every year. For example, people who mostly only travel to National Parks and such may not pass near a resort that often, at least on the shortest route.
And if the resort is really cheap, it may take a multi-day stay to actually use the credit. (That can happen, for example, with resorts in the Phoenix area in the summer.)
