In my experience it isnt always straightforward and sometimes does need to be sent to backoffice.
Yes, you'll see above that I wrote 7/10 need to call a supervisor, or as you say, a manager to do this. This is the most common scenario that occurs. It is always done whilst I wait, or if the agent is struggling to get a manager they will ask me to check back on BA.com in half an hour or so by which time I'll see the requested seats. This has always been reliable.
