As I point out my post above, it's the Gold and Silver members who are suffering. I know several of them who are very unhappy, especially when one phone agent tells them there's no space in first and another is offering to sell it to them.
I haven't had too much trouble upgrading either as a plat. Other than a flight I booked to Kennedy the same day of travel, I was at least able to snag an exit row (which by the way considering it was a redeye with no meal anyway I think I had a better seat!) I've been upgraded 100% of the time. It was on the JFK flight that the HP agent told me there is no space in first, but there is a "seat to sell". Good to see how they treat their top tiered flyers
