Not sure what you mean "buy outright", cash upgrades do not involve miles.
Any offer involving miles can be waitlisted -- only all cash can be an immediate confirmation
I mean AUA-EWR upgrade from G is 25K +$125, and AUA-EWR award in J is 30k+$65.
So it makes sense to just book the award and throw away the inbound, rather than hope for an upgrade.
But I don't think UA would allow 2 reservations under the same name on the same flight?
