It might actually be cheaper to buy inbound outright instead of upgrade (30k+$65 vs 25k +$125 for upgrade).
Don't understand the "buy outright" comment relative to miles. Purchased upgrades are cash only.
Unless you're willing to pay the cash price, you may want to reconsider this entire exercise. Putting pax on a waitlist they are unlikely to clear probably not such a great gift.
