It might actually be cheaper to buy inbound outright instead of upgrade (30k+$65 vs 25k +$125 for upgrade).

The different fare classes on outbound and return will mean the mileage+copay offers will be different
Not sure what you mean "buy outright", cash upgrades do not involve miles.
