This is why I - NEVER - CHECK - BAGS. Most people I know could survive with carryons if they packed fewer clothes and just had laundry done on longer trips. Beats the alternative.
On the rare occasion when a family member checked a bag (and the flight was then cancelled) WN put the bag on the next flight and delivered it to our home within 4 hours of arrival. So, no complaints from me.
