A bit off-topic, but I'm curious about this. Do you mean these airports had zones where passengers arriving on an international flight could connect to another international flight without legally crossing the Canadian border? If so, why did they give up on that? I would imagine this was mostly to serve itineraries between Europe and U.S./Mexico/Caribbean.
