NH will not ticket the reservation until both flights are confirmed (going and return), so you will not be able to use the first flight even if confirmed since it will not be ticketed.
If you really want to travel on the first flight, just find any day that you can confirm for the return, then they will issue the ticket. If you no show for the return flight, you will lose the
miles since you cannot travel one-way on a NH award ticket.
