Is it worth it? To me yes. I get to give my mom a taste of intl F without redeeming/spending a boatload of miles/dollars for a F seat, and watch her surprise as she takes her suite seat.

Not wasteful at all. I value 30k miles at perhaps $350-$400, not much more than the 12 stickers would cost ($300) to upgrade your itn. Mileage upgrades are a decent deal on transcon trips, especially if you can get into F on 777s. You paid a small premium for certainty, an excellent trade. I've done the same with my parents.
Excellent use of miles, IMO.
Most wasteful award ticket? Hafta be LAX-LAS.
