Well, if you're going to connect at JFK from the west coast, your choice is either a daytime flight connecting to a red-eye, or a red-eye connecting to a day flight TATL. I don't know how many people do the latter, but somewhere in there, there's going to be a red-eye, so I'm not sure it's that useless after all. I'd be curious as to the mix of how people do the trip to LHR from the west coast.
