I'm considering flying JFK -> LAX -> HND in separate tickets, where JFK -> LAX and LAX -> HND are both AA flights. (Booking them as one itinerary causes the price to triple)

If I'm reading this correct - even though all flights are AA, they won't through check my bags to HND, right? I'd still need to collect my bags at LAX and check them again at the counter?
