Sounds like checks weren’t done at least in advance, even though the airport has been open for 2 hours before boarding was to start.

This delay was avoidable.
At my carrier, if the RON station had maintenance personal, the jet came in with no write ups, and there was no scheduled maintenance planned for that tail number? Then our maintenance folks would do a walk around to kick the tires while looking for leaks, holes & dents. If none were found, quick visit to the cockpit and a brief look at systems and the log book history. After that, with no issues found, that jet went to bed until the next days tow up. At an out station with on call contract wrench turners? If it was a good plane coming in, the crew shut it down as they left for the hotel. I'm not sure what more you would expect an airline would do to get a plane ready to fly? That morning on your flight I guarantee one of the drivers took a walk to double check before he loaded himself up. After that it's in the Airline MX Gods hands. Delays are frustrating for everyone. Airlines hate them because they cost the carrier money. I have no idea what your MX issue was, but if I was in Vegas? My money would be on it not being "avoidable". Now the lack of information? Hell ya that is a legit issue. Something that most airlines fail at miserably is talking to the folks, even if it is just to say every 30 min..."We sorry we are still working on the problem and we have no idea how much longer, we will try to have more info in 30 minutes".
