I am looking to book our next ET business award flights now. The ORD-ADD-JNB connection is only 40 minutes (assuming we book ET575/ET809 to arrive JNB in the early afternoon). In our previous experience connecting through ADD, I do not think we would have made a 40 minute connection with all the passengers being channeled through one set of security lanes and with most/all the US arrivals and South African departures using bus gates.
I can book the next flight (ET575/ET849) and although it is a longish (over 7 hour) connection, we would get some quality lounge time. And an absolutely no stress connection.
I would still book the first option and be mentally prepared to be bumped to the afternoon flight. On average ET575 has been arriving at 0740 local time, ET809 is scheduled to leave at 0840 (although pushback is on average around 0905.) Worst case you will be shuttled from aircraft to aircraft (Cape Town and Accra connections see this a lot.)
