Ba companion flight upgrade

Please can someone advise....
Sadly, my first ever companion voucher on my blue AMEX came through AFTER the rules had changed to economy flights only!
So, I now have an economy flight to use by Feb. I am looking at some USA destinations for myself and my partner but we really want to fly business though.
If I go ahead and use the voucher to book, will it offer me to pay to upgrade the flights in MMB of a normal BA flight? If not, can I pay at the desk on the day?
Does anyone have any experience at all of this. I know it's a first world problem, but if there's no chance at all then I have to weigh up whether to use the voucher on a short haul flight, or suck it up and spend 8 or so hours in economy, which I haven't travelled for years!
Any advice greatly appreciated.
