I have previously changed frequent flyer numbers of BA flights on Finnair website. Once I changed from Qatar number to BA number whilst queuing for boarding and the flight was successfully credited to BA. Like you I did it for seat choice benefits as I had one world ruby with qatar but no status with BA and back then qatar wasn’t on avios scheme yet.
