Due to several cancellations in the past 2.5 years -- this is the
fifth time I am re-booking this trip to Japan due to Covid (a return to the Sapporo snow festival) -- I actually have two flights booked to FRA to connect with my flight to Tokyo (although on different PNRs): a BA LHR-FRA one the night before my FRA-HND flight; and also an early morning, same-day LHR-FRA LH flight before my Tokyo flight. I'm probably minded to take the BA flight on the night before so that I will already be landside at FRA (staying overnight at the FRA Hilton airport hotel at the Squaire).

The MLL is nice, the FCT is outstanding. This being said if you are originating at Frankfurt you would need to exit via passport control to get to the MLL, enter again to get outside to the street, and exit again to get out to your Tokyo flight. Up to you. Of course if you are arriving from a non-Schengen country to begin with you are already outside so why not?
