If there is space in the overheads, then there is no need to use the floor, and if there were 3 hat bins with space in them there is zero pressue on cabin crew to get things on to the floor. So if this happened as stated, and you were only flying with 2 modest bags, then it's just down to a particularly eccentric member of cabin crew who you will have very little chance of flying with in the future.
I have to say – once the door is shut and all the passengers are seated, I will always remove any luggage from around my feet and place it into spare capacity in the bins overhead. I don’t need to be told that I can’t do this, or that I should be doing it. It is just so logical – that I do it. I’ve never been told off.
