Sorry to hear the JW lounge was so poor - I've never stayed at that property (always stay on the Northside) but had understood that it had an excellent lounge. Maybe it was pre-Covid.

Regarding a paid bar, I suspect it could be based on Indiana liquor laws. Indiana only allowed alcohol sales in grocery stores a few years ago and still have Sunday blue laws. That said, in the US I'm happy if a Marriott brand hotel even has wine/beer/alcohol offerings in the evening.
