Exchanging cash is generally a terrible idea, especially if you are not doing it at a Japanese airport.
For example, right now, 100,000 JPY will get you $674 if you exchange it at actual market rates through an online service like Wise, or spend it on a Japanese debt/credit card in the US. But it will only get you $654 through GPA (one of the airport currency exchange vendors in Japan), and only $628 over the counter at Bank of America.
