I do not believe this is common, and I ended up just OK without any problem for that trip or any subsequent trip. But it is bad enough for me not to try that again.
There is more of a push these days to find Cdn citizens who have US visas/green cards and spend a lot of time in Canada to dig in to see if you still live in USA or have moved back to Canada. A lot of people with green cards move back to Canada and don’t give in their green card and try to keep using it. Especially during 2020-2022 covid. I get asked about my past 6-12 months of trips all the time. Never lie and you are fine. This has nothing to do with renting a car in USA and taking it to Canada for a few days.
