I do this every month. Never had a problem. Either you had an immigration issue or a customs issue. Not an issue with renting a car in USA and returning it to USA after driving it into Canada.
Yeah, I fly and drive between the two countries at least two or three times per month. Never have a problem. Until on one long business trip to Boston, I drove back to Canada for the weekend. When I headed back to US, I got grilled for a whole hour for everything I have done in the last few years.
I do not believe this is common, and I ended up just OK without any problem for that trip or any subsequent trip. But it is bad enough for me not to try that again.
