I always laugh when people use "pro tip" for a hack that is very amateur.
Some hotels don't want to bother with making you move rooms - this is true. Others will definitely make you move, especially at higher occupancies. Book a suite or lounge-access room as an IHG nobody and you are moving rooms for your award nights. Book a slightly preferred room as a Diamond and you'll be fine - except you would have been upgraded throughout so you just pi$$ed some money away.

That is a hack that may or may not work in your favor. The hotel can force you to move if they don't have the nicer room available during the second reservation.
