You can try for same day upgrade (based on availability) from C to F during domestic check-in.

Within each status group, time of check in will matter for the waitlist. But if you are Sapphire, a Diamond member that checks in later than you will be higher on the waitlist than you.
One last question, can I ask for the same day upgrade (assuming it is available on the day of departure) on the returning leg?
Eg I check in HND to fly to ISG, can I upgrade on the returning leg (ISG>HND) which is on the same day?
Or do i need to check in separately? (Eg check in person at the counter and get ticket printed in HND and ISG?)
