I can’t help explain it but you could make a separate reservation for the additional night. It’s easy for them to combine the reservations at checkin. I’m actually doing that right now at a Holiday Inn. 5 nights paid for by work plus I’m spending an extra night this weekend using points. The front desk combined both reservations in about 20 seconds so I won’t have to check out then back in or switch rooms.
