My understanding is that each segment for the promotion is based on the departure time of the flight. So for example if your flight is scheduled to depart before midnight December 31, that particular flight would count. If you have a return flight on say January 1st or other later date, that flight would not count.

But I am not 100% sure, but that is my understanding.
