Indeed I wouldn’t count on such a 12 year rule necessarily working out easily.
And just wait for the AY-QR stuff that may go on.

Saw a family of five where the three kids were all under 11 years old — something like 3/4 years old, a 5/6/7 years old and a 9/10 years old — but QR assigned only two seats of the five together and the other three had solo seat assignments nowhere near each other either . This on what was said to be a completely full flight during peak family vacation time. The check-in and gate personnel said let the QR FAs sort it out on-board; and yet they had no real good idea on how to try to do so. [I had a seat block next to me — which was news to me and to the FAs — so I managed to help make it work out, no thanks to the FAs or ground personnel.]
