  2. book 3 JAL tickets through BA for 36k points + $450 fuel charge
  3. book UA Boeing 777-200 at 35k points each
    4. 4th option would be to book BA award flight to jakarta with layover in NRT. get off at NRT and miss second leg of JAL flight. the fuel charges for flights to jakarta are at $150 usd . . not sure if i would get in trouble for missing the second leg though
It's obvious that everyone says ANA and JAL economy is so much better than any UA economy flight especially for international.

But since fuel charges are so insane would it be better to just book 3 one way economy flights out of JFK on UA Boeing 777-200 since i won't have to pay a fuel charge? (35k award points through UA)

Is the UA metal really that bad and uncomfortable for international?
I think most will say JAL has the better hard product in Y. Their 777s are 9 across vs 10 across for ANA and UA. Their 787s are generally 8 across vs 9 across for the others.
