So I just returned from MLE on my J award and, though again it wouldn’t let me check in online, I had no problems at the desk. I was in business class for my entire MLE-DOH-BOS journey home.

I didn’t start any complaints process while in the Maldives … but I am going to today. My plan, based on everyone’s generous feedback on this thread, is as follows:

1. Contact Alaska customer care and request a refund in points for the lower cabin class. Alaska was not in the wrong here, so I only want to make sure I pay for what was received.

2. Contact Qatar first and offer them an opportunity to make good on the situation prior a DOT complaint. I will be asking for monetary compensation for the value in the difference in cabin class OR 340,000 Avios which would allow my partner and I a one-way redemption back using Standard level awards.

3. File a complaint with the DOT should Qatar not offer satisfactory compensation.

4. Enlist anteater’s help offered above if all else fails. Thanks anteater for the offer.

I will update as this progresses. Best wishes for uneventful and enjoyable travels for those with upcoming reservations! I hope that I am a very limited exception.
