Amex Canada Gold points redemption value question?

Trying to decide on best value for my points. I’ve read contradictory info so would appreciate help.

Some years ago an Amex agent told me the best value for points was paying a statement with accrued points. Perhaps that has changed?

My recent reading suggests that merchandise rewards and pre-paid credit cards are terrible value. Amex actually atm has something I want @ 41,900 pts. Three prepaid credit cards totalling $300 (value incl tax of the item) comes to fewer points according to the website. If that’s the case, I’m better off getting the cards and buying the item from a local store, use my Amex to pay, get buyers assurance, etc etc.

Tthese decisions are very personal, of course. I don’t need airline points and I have about 500K Amex points. I would appreciate any help as to what to consider in making my decision and comments about best value for using points.
