This is pretty normal because after the split, both PNRs are still linked, and the airport checkin system would display both PNRs’ passengers.
The same would happen if you book two separate reservations (that have the same itinerary) and call in to link them.
I believe this might be a standard feature provided by amadeus. If you ever check in with LH, you can add multiple PNRs before you start the check in process.
