The photo for facial recognition is copied from your passport and saved. The first time you use a kiosk updated for facial recognition it would have prompted you to insert your passport so they can scan your passport photo and store it. Any photos taken at the Nexus egates & kiosks after your passport photo has been saved are compared against the saved passport photo on file to confirm your identity. This has replaced the iris scan system that is no longer used.

So both the photo taken at the kiosk/egate as well as the saved passport photo are used for the recognition process. They're just compared against each other to confirm they're the same person.
