In this case it seems down to JL's exhorbitant surcharges which Qantas is happy to collect and keep

If you were to book on a Qantas flight, what are the taxes and charges?

Comparing a one way ticket with a return is not a fair comparison. A more valid comparison would be against the one way economy fare which is $1302.
