When MileagePlus was celebrating its 40th birthday earlier this year, United was handing out paper coupons with a code at tables in IAH for a free EconomyPlus seat. Also, pens with a stylus cap. Love free swag!
AA gave a lot of prizes for the 40th, including MCE seats, on a dedicated website last year (
https://www.aadvantage40th.com/). I got a few MCE selections (and some preferred seats, a few extra hundred miles) out of it but never needed to use them.

How many people fly on their birthday? The number of beneficiaries is going to be pretty small. And I'm guessing it doesn't apply to companions, so there's some deterence to actually using it, for some people.
