I'm struggling to understand how you didn't realise you were being charged more than the fare that was on hold. I have never had a situation where that has happened. I know what the flight is costing me. I know what my flight credit is worth. Therefore I know what balance I will be paying. AA have always confirmed the amount before charging my card, and I always get an SMS / alert on my cell phone as the transaction is processed and the ticket re-issued. Over what period of time did these transactions take place? I know for sure that if I had been overcharged by AA that I'd be making doubly sure on subsequent calls that the same thing didn't happen again.
I would have suggested taking this up with your credit card company - but the fact you have had the excess payments returned as a flight credit means that the CC company probably won't accept your claim.
For the first paragraph, AA didn't give a reason, and correct.
For the second paragraph, when I placed a specific fare on hold, and when I called AA and gave the PNR the phone agent read the details of the trip to me and the phone agent didn't mention the total fare, why should I expect that AA kept everything about the reservation intact, other than doubling the price? The flight credit value wasn't known before I called, since it was a flight credit for a trip that I had partially taken, and the remaining value wasn't known (oddly enough, AA had to call someone internally and that calculation made when I was talking to the phone agent).
We're all busy and some people care more about tracking expenses than others do (I would fail miserably if I were on the Price is Right TV show). But now I know that AA overcharges its customers, so one reason I wanted to get a refund instead of just using the flight credit for a new trip was to avoid having to deal with a dispute about a fare again.
Third paragraph, thanks, that's very helpful (I hadn't thought of that).
