Bloc VIP Program and Bloc Hotel Gatwick South
Booking and VIP Program I had a very early morning flight from Gatwick South to Athens leaving at 6:40am. Living up in Hammersmith, it would have been a very early morning Uber down to Gatwick, so decided to book a hotel around Gatwick for the evening. Researched the various Gatwick airport options, and knowing I was leaving from the South Terminal, and only needed a place to crash for a night's sleep, it came down to between the Bloc or the Yotel. In the end, I decided on the Bloc hotel as it seemed a bit more spacious, and didn't require to pre-pay.The Yotel was £135 pre-pay with no cancellation - that was the only option. The Bloc had multiple rates - for VIP members and non-members, and also for pre-pay and pay later with cancellation. I wanted to pay on arrival (keeping cancellation an option), and it was £195 for non-VIP members, or £165 if you joined their VIP+ program. VIP+ program is free to join, so worth joining to save the £30 (also tells you how much your data and email address are worth to loyalty programs). The VIP+ programs offers a savings of at least 10%, free upgrades if available, premium security at Gatwick, early check-in and late check-out. Easy to join the program and book. Haven't been inundated with emails from them since I joined either. Location The hotel is located on just outside the entrance to security in the South Terminal. Check In Check-in has both a mobile and in-person option. I tried the mobile option, but it didn't work. However there was no queue at the desk so was able to check-in quickly. The front-desk clerk said I probably couldn't check-in due to having to run my card to pay for the room.As soon as the payment was verified, I was given a card with my room number, an entry card and a card allowing me to access Premier Security the next day.In addition, the desk clerk let me know that as a VIP+ member I had been upgraded from a regular room (inner room with no window) to a Vista room (with a window). Room To access your floor, you need to sweep your card in the lift to select your floor (the cards select any floor). The hotel is dark but clean and well appointed.Inside the room is a short entry way with the bathroom to the right and then into the main room with a bed right against the far wall. There is a TV mounted at the foot of the bed, with a good selection of TV stations (basically the common FreeView TV channels).Bathroom is small, but clean and includes towels and toilettries. The only problem I have, but I knew going in and made the decision, is that the bathroom is a wet room with the shower not separate but just falling on the floor and draining through a drain on the floor. I usually like to brush my teeth last (after my shower and getting dressed), but can't easily in these wet rooms without getting my socks wet. However, I adjusted my morning routine, and brushed before my shower for the early morning wake-up.The Vista Room includes a window, which overlooked the apron of the South Terminal. Would have been good plane spotting if it wasn't so dark and rainy, and I wasn't out of the room by 5AM the next morning! Smart Room Control The Bloc provides a Smart Room Control webpage once you have checked-in, allowing you to control entry, lights, AC/heating, blinds, TV and check-out. It was very slick and easy to use, and very nice to be able to lie in bed watching "Phil Collins at the BBC" on BBC 4 and turning off the lights, closing the blinds and rolling over and going to bed when it was sleepy-time.Check-out was easy, and wandered out leaving my key card in the room. Check-out and Security As I stated above, checked out using the app, and was down and outside security at Gatwick South within 2 minutes. The Premium Security line was closest to the hotel exit, which was handy with the Premier Security Pass provided by the hotel. Was through in minutes and off to my flight to Athens. Overall Overall, a good location if you just want a place to crash before an early morning flight, or are looking for a place to crash for a few hours during the day (day rates are available). Joining the VIP+ program is a no-brainer for the savings. The only restaurants around are whatever is available pre-security at Gatwick, or if you want a walk across a couple airport feeder roads, McDonalds. So I ate dinner at home before going down to Gatwick. As a single traveller, was fine for me. I know a couple who stayed there, and they thought it was fine. The beds, however, are only twins (I think), so be prepared to snuggle up close for the evening.Overall would recommend for a quick night stay.
