My question is once I arrive at LHR I will need to go through customs, gather bags, "exit" the airport go to another Terminal (AL is Terminal 2, VA is in Terminal 3), recheck bags, go through security and then off to the gate for the next flight. Normally I wouldn't do this but a $1400 savings is well a $1400 savings. And yes I have looked at other flight options and they are more expensive. While I am not 100% thrilled with the VA timings the cost is pretty decent for this level of service.
Note the airline designation for Aer LIngus is EI and not AL. Yo won't see 'AL' on a ticket. boarding pass or airport screen.
Yes you will need to clear UK immigration, collect bags (VS wopn't interline on separate tickets), walk through customs then make your way to T2 where EI are based and check in etc etc
If your VS flight is late and you miss your EI flight then VS aren't responsible for rebooking you and you will then be in EIs hands as to whether they rebook you for free (or not).
