I thought you all might be interested in this video from WSJ, which explains what happens with CC fees. It is, of course, not as straight-forward as you expect. Merchants don't seem to have much control over what fee they're charged, which can vary by card. Congress (US, of course) is (supposedly) getting involved to add competition through alternate interchange/network options which would make credit card networks more like debit card networks (i.e. cheaper).
